I have constructed a new desk for my shack comprising two five-foot butcher block slabs on legs. The tables are thirty inches, front to back. This creates a small problem. The coax switches used to select various antenna options are not within convenient reach. We discussed the issue at breakfast and came up with several crazy ideas. One of which wasn’t so crazy!
Lynn suggested extensions for the knobs. My design follows. As illustrated, there are two tables, right and left (not drawn to scale). There is roughly a half inch of space between the two. The slanted surface with two protrusions will be about seven inches square, give or take, and after prototyping is complete, I’ll have my son fabricate this piece on his 3D printer. The protrusions are for the Delta switch original knobs.
Not only will the switches be conveniently within reach, but all the cables will be neatly tucked beneath the desk.
This detail shows how the letters will be raised and appropriately positioned so that the switch will point to the correct selection.
The bottom switch will be similarly configured.
Beneath the table will be a 1/2-inch plywood frame that holds the actual switches.
See detail. (Front side “grayed out” to illustrate interior).
Each of the two original knob shafts will be extended (up to 10 inches) with the stainless rods on the left by using the couplings on the right, all available from Amazon.
